Around this time of the year, many of us get a cold, but sometimes we might have the flu and just don’t know it. How can you tell the difference between a cold and the more serious flu (influenza)?

Common Cold

*Usually lasts about a week, developing slowly
*Sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, cough, sore throat, low fever
*You probably feel a little tired, with most of the symptoms focused on your upper body (nose, throat and head)
*Call your primary doctor if you don’t feel well or if the discharge from your nose or throat turns yellow or green

Flu

*Usually lasts about a week to 10 days, developing suddenly
*Chills, weakness, loss of appetite, body aches, dry cough, high fever
*You probably feel weak and tired, achy body
*Call your primary doctor if you don’t feel well or if you already have another chronic illness (asthma, diabetes, etc.)
